Osky Robotics will be hosting a meet similar to last years on Saturday, November 14th from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. We need all the help we can get from parents and friends. A Head Referee and a scorer have volunteered but we still need more help. Ways you can help are:
There will be an announcement seeking high school students for some of these roles. I will use Celly to spread the word about future needs. Please email either Steve or Joyce if you are willing to help.

Oskaloosa Robotics
Robotics is a team activity. Being part of a team brings with it rewards and responsibilities. Doing an Internet search of What is teamwork? Brings almost 60 million hits with the majority of the articles concerning the workplace. Then do a search of How to teach teamwork. The first three hits on the day I did it were from M.I.T., Berkeley and Colorado State. These universities are concerned about their graduates having good team skills to use in the workplace. This is why being on a FIRST team enhances scholarship, college and job applications. Steve and I are both concerned about the robotics program at OHS not exemplifying the teamwork concept. We are concerned about a lack of communication and dedication. In an effort to make robotics available to all we have created a situation of little buy in. In the past we have always had a core group of students showing up for practice consistently. This core group was able to assimilate the other students’ erratic attendance. This year we are missing our core group. This is more of a problem for the Sock Monkeys than the Ninjaneers, as they are an older group with more responsibilities and activities. They also have a large portion of their members participating in marching band. Band is a huge time and physical commitment and we applaud their dedication to it. Our first League competition will probably be November 14th. Good news is our league does not go to Corning this year. The league championship will be at Ottumwa on February 6th. Other members of our league are Knoxville, Indianola, Newton, Pella, Melcher-Dallas, Bondurant and Ottumwa. We would like parents and students to brain storm this bump in the road we are having. Perhaps practices should be at a different time? Should we change our philosophy of embracing all students? Longer practices so band students could join us? Supper provided practices? The Ninjaneers are currently practicing Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45 to 5:00 with the Sock Monkeys meeting Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I would like to have the Ninjaneers meet another day but I am not available on Wednesday until 3:30. If you have not joined our Celly yet please do. Ninjaneers is @Robitcs3608 and Sock Monkeys is @SockMonkeys. An account at Celly is free and easy to use. Members must be approved by either Steve or I so email us if we do not approve you. [email protected] or [email protected]. The member list is private, the messages are curated (Steve and I have to approve each message before it is sent to all members) and archived (the messages are all saved for inspection). Sign up on the Robotics Blog page for this Friday's (Oct. 2) concession stand fundraiser. We had a terrific turnout for helpers at the concession stand. We only have the opportunity to do this once a year so all of our training won't be needed until next fall.
Oskaloosa will be hosting a League competition on November 14th. We are looking at a time frame of 9 am to 2:30 pm, if all goes well. Ann Lenox has volunteered to head up a concession stand committee. Last year we bought the ingredients and cleared about $200. Perhaps this year parents could donate some of the needed food. Just a thought. Let Ann know if you would like to help. Note: The robotics club will be working the Football concession stand this Friday, October 2. We have quite a few band parents so we need non-band parents to work during half time. The robotics banquet is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20th at 5:30. 7th and 8th graders please bring a drink and/or a side. 9th through 11th please bring a main dish 12th grade please bring dessert. RSVP to [email protected]@oskycsd.org Also: If you are interested in reading more about worlds and what happened go to: Dangerously Irrelevant and search: "Sock Monkeys"
A huge thank you to Scott for allowing us to once again blog for him! As the day continued, they started matches. If you were watching on the live stream, you would have seen us in action! If not: You will see photos at the bottom and I will start to explain.
Our Qualification Matches are: 9, 25, 47, 57, 78, 91, 101, 122, and 132. Tune in tomorrow to the live stream. #Support Lets do this! We only got to play the first two with the time allotted and we are currently in 8th place! We are 2-0 and extremely excited for tomorrow. Tomorrow will consist of many more matches, scouting, and going to the big dome (we are currently at Union Station)! At the Edwards Jones Dome we will have opening ceremonies, a college/scholarship row, and we will be able to see the FRC (First Robotics Competition) and the FLL (First Lego League)... We will also be able to see the companies who helped sponsor this event and get a lot of one on one information from them. I don't really have a lot of information except for good news. The robot is still working great as well as the team members. Just remember: Gracious Professionalism and Continuous Improvement! Thank you so much to the community/business's who helped get us here! You guys mean SO much to us! #MonkeySwag #WorldChampionship #International #SUPERCOOL Our match numbers are: 9, 25, 47, 57, 78, 91, 101, 122, and 132. Tune in LIVE to the live stream. #Support
Thank you so much to the community/business's who helped get us here! You guys mean SO much to us! #MonkeySwag #WorldChampionship #International #SUPERCOOL As I type this, the team is going through final preparations before leaving for the World Championship this afternoon. Drivers and programmers are practicing, the notebook, bill of materials, and other related things are being printed, and all sorts of other last-minute preparations are taking place. With competition starting at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, the livestream link to watch our division's matches has been posted at http://livestream.com/accounts/13199388/FTC-Edison
Other information on the championship, including livestreams for other divisions and the event schedule, is available at http://championship.usfirst.org/ Molly will be blogging about World's twice a day at http://dangerouslyirrelevant.org/ Be sure to check there for updates from us personally, as well as continuing to follow our own website! Our various projects are coming along nicely! The souvenirs we'll be distributing at World's are coming in now. The stickers and keychains are in, the buttons are being made, and the new shipment of business cards is on order, as are a new set of team shirts that we're getting so we don't have to wear the same shirts four days in a row. The robot is mostly ready. Every component we need is on the robot, and we're now alternately practicing driving and testing autonomous, which includes all sorts of new features!
There will be a parent meeting regarding additional information about World's on Tuesday, April 14 at 6:00 PM at the robotics room. The meeting will include updated information about our finances, rooming, etc.. Please feel free to share the GoFundMe link through various social media, as every donation helps!
